Did you know…

  1. In September 2023, Chiropractic celebrated its birthday of 128 years?
Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by Daniel David (DD) Palmer, in Davenport Iowa. Palmer had originally practiced as a magnetic healer but became very interested in human anatomy and the effect that misalignment of the bones in the spine could have on the nervous system. He identified these misalignments as “subluxations” – meaning that while the bones in a joint are still within the normal joint space, they are often in an incorrect position within that joint, creating pressure and irritation to the nerves around that joint. He began “adjusting” (correcting) these subluxations and patients experienced better health. He later went on to open the very first Chiropractic College, also in Davenport IA. It just so happens that Dr. Jean-Luc, Dr. Ashlee and Dr. Michelle all attended this very school for their Chiropractic education. In fact, Dr. Michelle also taught there for 16 years and Dr. Ashlee taught there for 4 years!
  1. Chiropractic care is based on the nervous system and not just “cracking backs”?
A fundamental belief in Chiropractic is that most health-related problems and issues are based on misalignments in the spine that cause interference in the nervous system. The nervous system is a vast communication system between the brain, which is the control system of the body, and the body itself. When misalignments cause the nerves to become compressed or irritated, the messaging network experiences various disruptions, which can manifest in a lot of different ways in the body. While pain is an obvious symptom that brings patients to the office, it is not the only way that nervous system interference can cause problems. Chiropractors adjust the bones that surround and protect the nervous system to allow for better communication across the network. So, while it seems that we are focused on your back or on your pain, we are really interested in restoring the nervous system to its best level function to keep your whole system healthy.
  1. Nobel prize winner, Dr. Roger Sperry, recognized the vital importance of the spine and nervous system?
According to Dr. Sperry’s research, “90% of the of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine.” Getting adjusted by a Chiropractor is one of the most important things we can do to make sure that the spine is properly aligned, moving freely, and functioning properly so that your brain can function at its best.
  1. Chiropractic care is beneficial for more than just back and neck pain?
While back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, and herniated discs are the most common conditions that lead people to seek chiropractic care, we can often help with numerous other conditions in the body. Remember, the nervous system and disruptions to the communication network result in a wide variety of conditions. Chiropractic care has been known to help patients with all sorts of issues – earaches, acid-reflux, gastrointestinal issues, constipation, colic, symptoms of menstrual dysfunction, endocrine disorders, and many others. If you or someone that you know is experiencing a dysfunction in the body, consider getting a chiropractic evaluation for the nerves that control that area – it has the potential to really help!
  1. Chiropractic care is for EVERYONE?
While some chiropractors specialize in working with specific populations, it is important to recognize that chiropractic care is both safe and effective for everyone. Remember, the nervous system controls everything and the spine surrounds and protects it. Anyone with a spine and a nervous system can benefit from getting adjusted. Chiropractors can, and do, safely treat infants, children, adults, pregnant women, senior citizens – again, ANYONE with a nervous system and a spine…there are even animal chiropractors!
  1. Subluxation has many causes?
Subluxations can be caused by obvious things, such as injuries and trauma, but subluxations can also be caused by less obvious things. Things like stress, emotional/mental health crises, toxins in the environment, poor food choices, inflammation in the body, repetitive activities, and poor postures can also contribute to subluxation. In Chiropractic college, we came up with an abbreviation: the “3 Ts”, which stands for Thoughts, Traumas, and Toxins, as the causes of subluxation.
  1. Chiropractors can adjust more than just your spine?
While being most well-known for spinal adjustments, chiropractors are also trained to adjust other joints in the body – ribs, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, hands, feet, fingers, and toes. If there is a joint that isn’t moving properly and causing dysfunction, we can often help that too!
  1. Chiropractic has more techniques (adjusting methods) than a month has days?
There are 55 different, established techniques in the chiropractic profession. While no doctor is proficient at all 55, we are often very proficient in multiple adjusting techniques. Our goal is always to adjust patients in a way that can help them to get better but that also feels most comfortable to them. In our office, our doctors are most proficient at Gonstead, Diversified, Thompson, Toggle, Activator, Flexion-Distraction, and Extremity techniques. We also use x-rays to help us to be very focused and specific in our corrections. We are always happy to discuss our patient’s preferences with them to make the experience the most comfortable it can be. We are also trained to modify our techniques for special populations such as babies, children, and seniors or patients who are in acute pain.
  1. Chiropractic is the 3rd most utilized health care professional?
Medical doctors and dentistry are numbers 1 and 2, but Chiropractors are the 3rd most utilized providers in healthcare. Interestingly, the data tells us that only about 12% of Canadians see a Chiropractor. Be sure to tell your friends and family about the importance of chiropractic care for their optimal health and wellness.
  1. How many NHL teams have a team chiropractor?
Since hockey season is now officially upon us, this felt like important information to share! All 32 NHL teams have a regular team chiropractor who helps to keep the team adjusted, not just to recover from injuries, but also to keep their bodies performing at their optimum level of athletic function. If chiropractic care is important to multi-million-dollar athletes to support their day-to-day performance, shouldn’t it be part of yours as well?
